A family orchard in Brussels, Illinois since 1937

Open July through October

The country day worth the drive.

A mother and son family orchard in Calhoun County, Illinois. Homegrown peaches, fresh-baked weekend pies, and a stand worth the drive across the river.

The Saturday Question

“What are we doing this weekend?”

If you’ve asked that question for the third Saturday in a row, you’re not alone. Most “family fun” days look the same on Sunday morning, and feel the same on the credit card.

  • The kids are bored of the same indoor places. Parents are tired of paying $80 for it.
  • You want a real country day. Not a manicured agritourism “experience” with wristbands and lines.
  • The grandparents want to come too, and most kids’ activities don’t leave room for them.
  • You’d drive an hour for something worth it. Just not for a roadside stand selling Georgia peaches.

That’s the day we set out to make on the other side of the river.

Why People Cross the River

Family-grown. Fresh-baked. Worth the trip.

Debbie and Blake Kamp, mother and son, run Hagen Family Orchard the way the family always has. Peaches off our own trees, pies from our own oven, and a few Calhoun-area neighbors filling in the produce we don’t grow ourselves.

1937

When Jake Hagen planted the first trees. The same family hands work the orchard today.

3

Generations of families visiting on the same patch of ground. Grandparents, parents, kids.

2

Owner-operators in the orchard, every day. Mother and son. No middle managers.

From the beginning

Founded in 1937 by Jake Hagen, with son Kenny Hagen. Worked the same family way ever since.

A Day at the Orchard

The Hagen Way

Four steps. About four hours, give or take a slice of pie.

1

Cross the river.

Brussels Ferry from the Grafton side, or Golden Eagle Ferry from Missouri. Roll the window down. The kids will love it. The drive on the other side is the part you’ll talk about on the way home.

2

Walk in. Look around.

Step into the storefront. See what’s pulled fresh that morning. Pick a pie off the rack. Grab a scoop of ice cream and let the grandparents off the hook for a minute.

3

Take some home.

A peach pie still warm from the oven. A basket of peaches. Apple dumplings in the fall. Cash or card. Same price either way.

4

Come back.

Peaches in July. Blackberries the same week. Apples and pumpkins by fall. The locals come every other weekend. You’ll see why.

Save the trip. Check what’s ready.
